When I first became a mother, I didn’t realize how much of myself I would have to let go of. At first, I fought against it—I mourned the freedom, the time, the sense of self I felt slipping away. But what I didn’t see then was that something new was being built in its place.
I think good motherhood, at its core, is an act of surrender. It’s laying down what you thought life would be and embracing what it is. It’s growing into someone who loves more deeply and learns what really matters.
In creating All is Well, I sought to capture not just the daily sacrifice of a mother, but the profound, timeless love that stretches beyond the boundaries of life and death. The mother, cradling her child in the clouds, is meant to represent a love so deep and unshaken that it transcends the mortal realm. It’s the kind of love that lingers, that shapes, that continues even when we are separated.
This painting isn’t just about the physical act of mothering; it’s about the enduring, unbreakable bond between a mother and child—a love that remains steadfast through time, through trials, even through the veil of mortality. I wanted it to feel timeless, to reflect the eternal nature of a mother’s care, offering comfort that extends through all stages of life.
Motherhood changes us. It asks for more than we think we have, and yet, in the giving, we become something more. I hope that All is Well can offer one more quiet reassurance that even in our hardest seasons, even when we feel lost in the giving, we are being shaped into something greater. That as we love, we are also being refined.
And that in the end—through all the exhaustion, the sacrifice, the loss, and the love—if we did our best, all is well.
